I Want to Repent But Don't Know How
You know the word repentance, you have heard it your whole life, and you still do not know what it is supposed to look like for you right now.
A lot of people were taught the theology of repentance long before anyone showed them what it actually does day to day.
Direct answer
Repentance is not a feeling you have to manufacture or a punishment you administer to yourself. It is a turning, a real change in direction, made of honest acknowledgment and a different next step.
Biblical explanation
The Greek word most often translated repentance, metanoia, means a change of mind that produces a change of direction. The prodigal son's repentance was not staying in the pigpen feeling worse and worse, it was getting up and walking home. Paul writes that godly sorrow produces repentance leading to life, and distinguishes it clearly from worldly sorrow, which produces death. The distinction matters: one type of sorrow moves you, the other only keeps you stuck.
Scripture references: Mark 1:15, Luke 15:17-20, 2 Corinthians 7:10
What this might look like for you
- You keep revisiting the guilt instead of taking the next concrete step away from the pattern.
- You think you have to feel sufficiently terrible before repentance counts.
- You are not sure if real change has happened or if you are just telling yourself it has.
What this does not mean
- - Repentance is just feeling sorry.
- - You have to suffer a certain amount first.
- - Waiting until you feel worthy before you begin.
- - Repentance happens once and is finished forever; it is often a returning, not a single event.
If you have been treating repentance like a punishment to serve instead of a direction to walk in, this prayer is a place to start turning instead.
Prayer
God, I have been confusing punishing myself with actually repenting. Teach me what real turning looks like, not performance, not endless self-punishment, just an honest change of direction. I do not want to stay circling the same guilt. I want to walk toward something different. Help me begin even before I feel ready.
